CPM Formula Explained

CPM is derived from a simple relationship between three variables. Master these formulas to control your advertising budget with confidence.

CPM = Total Cost ÷ Total Impressions × 1,000

Calculate CPM

CPM = (Cost ÷ Impressions) × 1,000

Use when you know what you spent and how many impressions you received.

Calculate Cost

Cost = (CPM × Impressions) ÷ 1,000

Use to forecast your total ad spend before launching a campaign.

Calculate Impressions

Impressions = (Cost ÷ CPM) × 1,000

Use to estimate reach when you have a fixed budget and CPM rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CPM and how to use this calculator.

CPM stands for Cost Per Mille, where "mille" is Latin for one thousand. It is the cost an advertiser pays for every 1,000 ad impressions, and the standard metric for display, video and programmatic buying.
It depends on industry and platform. Display CPMs typically range from $0.50 – $3.00, social media (Facebook, Instagram) averages $5 – $15, and niche B2B or premium placements can exceed $30+.
CPM charges per 1,000 impressions whether or not users click, which suits brand awareness. CPC charges only when someone clicks, which suits traffic and conversions.
Broaden targeting, test different ad formats (native often beats banners), improve ad relevance, try less competitive time slots or regions, and consider programmatic buying through DSPs.
They use the same math from opposite sides. CPM is the advertiser's cost per 1,000 impressions. RPM is the publisher's earnings per 1,000 pageviews, usually lower because ad networks take a fee.
